Gate Safe, the original charity to campaign for improved safety standards for automated gates, was delighted to be invited to speak on the subject of automated gate safety at a recent event for engineer surveyors working within the insurance sector.

The event, run by Allianz, attracted around 550 delegates and was part of Allianz’ National Engineer Surveyor Roadshow, held in Solihull. Gate Safe’s founder Richard Jackson, and Technical & Training Manager Rob Williams took to the floor to provide engineer surveyors with a comprehensive overview of the factors influencing the safety of an automated gate installation and the steps that need to be taken to mitigate the risks.

Commenting on the roadshow Richard Jackson said:

We were delighted to participate in this event, especially since we have in the past tried to elicit interest on the subject of gate safety via the insurance industry’s trade body. We applaud Allianz on its forward-thinking and intention to ensure engineer surveyors sent out in the field to review a property – which might include automated gates – are suitably trained to appreciate the risks associated with these machines and the protocols that should be adopted to ensure their safety. We are keen to make the phrase ‘it’s only a gate’ redundant terminology amongst this audience.  Gate Safe has always believed that the insurance sector represents a potential route to influence change. If engineer surveyors are able to recognise an unsafe gate, this can be reflected in any survey report, which will ultimately affect the insurance cover for a property. This offers a powerful means to drive home the importance of a safe and compliant installation and the regular maintenance requirements associated with automated gates.
