Now that the UK has officially left the EU the CE mark fitted to gates as per the requirements of the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42EC has been replaced by the ‘United Kingdom Conformity Assessed’ or UKCA mark.
The UKCA mark will become the mandatory mark on a product to indicate that it conforms to UK legislation.
While the change is effective from 1st January 2021, the move towards UKCA is to be phased in during 2021 and from January 2022 all automated gates and barriers must feature the UKCA mark.
Therefore, during 2021 it will be acceptable to see gates installed in the UK fitted with a CE and/or UKCA mark, but from 1st January 2022 only UKCA marks will apply. If the gate is to be installed in Europe rather than the UK, during 2021 both marks will apply but from January 2022 if the gate is made in the UK but will be installed in Europe it will need a UKCA mark. Installers operating out of Northern Ireland (which is not included in Great Britain and which is aligned with the UK single market in terms of trading goods) will continue to use the CE mark or UCKA mark for products shipped into Great Britain. In October, it is expected that there will be further legislation which would mean that the CE marking regulations remain unamended for Northern Ireland.
The new UKCA symbol should be added to the mark minimum 5mm high.
