Important Safety Guidance for Manual Swing Barriers

Manual Swing Barrier
Example barrier for illustrative purposes

Following reports of several accidents involving swing barriers, below is essential safety information aimed at ensuring the secure operation of these installations.

Installers:

✅ Make sure that the barrier is fitted with a suitable hold open catch for use in the open and closed position

✅ Order the barrier with a high viz end piece to ensure the barrier arm is always clearly visible, use high viz paint to further enhance visibility

✅ Train all users to always secure the barrier in the open and closed position, including checking the latch has properly closed

If you are maintaining a site and you encounter this type of barrier, take the opportunity to conduct a quick risk assessment to determine if the barrier is fit for purpose. If not, offer a solution to the owner of the barrier

Owners:

✅ The barrier should always be held in an open or closed position and, never allowed to move freely in the wind

✅ Always check that the lock has latched

✅ If there is no high-viz end section please arrange to have one fitted
